Bounce House Injuries Are Becoming More Common

tbiAre bounce house injuries on the rise? According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), as the popularity of bounce houses and other inflatables grows, so, too, do the number of serious injuries caused by them.

In 2014, in Nashua, New Hampshire, two children aged 3 and 2 years old climbed into an inflatable bounce house. Almost immediately, what should have been a fun time turned to terror. A rogue gust lifted the bounce house into the air. The boys’ mother desperately gripped a rope hanging from the corner of the house, but it ripped away from her and soared into the air. The house flew higher than the rooftop of a nearby barn, roughly 50 feet into the air, before it took a savage dive into the ground, severely injuring the two boys inside. An investigation found that the house was not properly staked down, causing it to take flight.

At least four people have died in inflatables in the United States since 2000 and many more have been injured. The number of injuries on inflatables has been steadily increasing since 2008, according to the CPSC and the Child Injury Prevention Alliance. And it can happen anywhere; just last month in Austin, a young boy suffered a traumatic brain injury after falling through a hole in an inflatable bounce house at iPlay.
